Where ICA LA Is Located

The Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (ICA LA) is a non-collecting contemporary art museum in the Arts District of Downtown Los Angeles. Its visitor address is 1717 E 7th St, Los Angeles, CA 90021.

The museum occupies a renovated industrial building designed by wHY Architecture under the leadership of Kulapat Yantrasast. The building covers 12,700 square feet, giving the museum a dedicated home for exhibitions and public activity.

ICA LA developed from the Santa Monica Museum of Art, founded in 1988. The museum adopted the ICA LA identity in 2017, when it established its Arts District home. It opened at this location with the exhibition Martin Ramírez: His Life in Pictures, Another Interpretation.

Before the move to Downtown Los Angeles, the Santa Monica Museum of Art had organized more than 250 exhibitions featuring more than 300 artists, welcomed more than 1 million visitors, served more than 100,000 students, and formed more than 100 community partnerships.

Its work now spans exhibitions, education programs, and community partnerships, with an emphasis on contemporary art, experimentation, and emerging voices. The artist-designed logo is by Mark Bradford. The museum’s planned facility was intended to support exhibitions, public programs, education, dialogue, collaboration, retail, and special projects.

What to Expect from the Exhibitions

What to Expect from the Exhibitions

Since ICA LA does not maintain a permanent collection, exhibitions are the focus of a visit. The program brings contemporary art into conversation with experimentation and emerging artists rather than presenting a standing collection. Exhibition details change, so check the museum’s current listings before planning around a particular artist or show.

Some works on view may include loud noise, flashing lights, low lighting, or other elements. If those conditions could affect your visit, you can ask the museum about the exhibitions on view. Introductory exhibition texts are in English and Spanish, and large-print English and Spanish exhibition guides are available at the front desk.

Allow time for the public-facing bookstore and reading room if you want to add them to your visit; both are open whenever the museum is open.

ICA LA’s approach also reaches beyond the galleries. During the transition to the Arts District, its offsite work included artist studio visits and the Agency of Assets initiative for young people from Boyle Heights.

Hours, Admission, and Visitor Access

ICA LA is open Wednesday through Sunday, 11 a.m.–6 p.m., and closed Mondays, Tuesdays, and public holidays. Admission is always free. The published visitor information does not state that timed reservations or advance tickets are required for general admission, so you can plan for a standard visit without a ticket purchase.

The entrance, restrooms, lobby, and exhibition spaces are wheelchair accessible. One ADA parking space is directly in front of the museum; call (213) 928-0833 to reserve it if needed.

For accommodations for a public program, contact the front desk at the same number. School, college, and university groups larger than 10 can email learning@theicala.org. Private tours should be requested at least two weeks in advance and are subject to availability.

Before you go: Hours and visitor arrangements can change, so check the official site before you go.

Getting to ICA LA from Maywood

ICA LA is about an 11-minute drive from Maywood Inn, making it a practical outing from Maywood. By car, the museum is accessible from the 5 and 101 freeways at Seventh Street, or from the 10 freeway at Santa Fe Avenue.

Parking at the museum is free during normal operating hours and is limited to the duration of your museum visit. Street parking and nearby lots are limited; additional paid parking is available across the street and behind the museum at the AVA Arts District apartments.

If you’re taking a bus, ICA LA suggests MTA lines 60, 62, and 720 at 7th/Decatur, or lines 16, 18, 53, 62, and 720 at 6th/Central.

The Metro Gold Line stop at Little Tokyo/Arts District is 1.2 miles from the museum, a walk south on Alameda, or a four-minute car ride. These options give you a way to plan the final leg separately from the trip out from Maywood.

Other Stops in the Area

ICA LA identifies several other institutions in its neighborhood: The Broad, the California African American Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (MOCA), and The Underground Museum.

You can use the list to shape a wider museum outing, but check each institution’s own visitor information for its hours and access details. For another museum visit outside this neighborhood, see this guide to the Vincent Price Art Museum.
